The new 12-sided bimetallic £1 coin was put into circulation on March 28, 2017 and the legal tender status of the round 1 pound coin was withdrawn at midnight on October 15, 2017. It has been replaced for the first time in over thirty years because of its vulnerability to sophisticated counterfeiters (approximately 1/30 round £1 coins in circulation was a counterfeit). From this date shops and businesses should no longer accept these coins, but you can still take them to your bank or donate them. Businesses across the UK had to upgrade their machines to accept the new £1 coin.
