Crockard
Debased silver imitation of English pennies produced in the Netherlands and imported into England in the late thirteenth century. Edward I tried to prevent their import then, in 1299, allowed them to pass current as halfpennies. As they contained more than a halfpennyworth of silver this encouraged their trading in to be melted down and they disappeared from circulation within a year. Sometimes known as pollards.
