Iron
Metal, chemical symbol Fe (from Latin 'Ferrum'), used as a primitive form of currency from classical times onwards. Iron spits (obeliskoi) preceded the obol as the lowest unit of Greek coinage, a handful of six spits being worth a drachma (from drassomai, 'I grasp'). Cast iron coins were issued in China as a substitute for copper cash. Many of the emergency token issues of Germany during the First World War were struck in iron. Iron coins were issued by Bulgaria in 1943.
